From the world famous blunders of supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins and oh-so-many-more, we have loads of video of tits popping out, pussy being uncovered and the whole show ! But where did it all start to give us such opportunity to feast our eyes upon the women of the world ?
Let's start with the long standing tradition of the beauty pageant.....
In 1921 a unique American tradition began as a promotional gimmick when Atlantic City hotelmen decide to stage a flashy fall festival, or "pageant"to entice summer tourists to stay in town past Labor Day. The fall festival includes a "National Beauty Tournament" on the beach to select "the most beautiful bathing beauty in America". Local newsman, Herb Test, adds the crowning touch when he exclaims, "Let's call her 'Miss America!'" Eastern newspaper editors are invited to run photo contests to pick winners to represent their communities at the new pageant and finally eight contestants compete for the first Miss America title, won by Margaret Gorman as Miss Washington D.C !! When Mary Katherine Campbell wins the Miss America title two years in a row in 1923, q rule is instated that woman cannot hold the Miss America title more than once. By the end of the 20's, The National Beauty Tournament has achieved such popularity with the public that over 70 contestants arrive in Atlantic City to compete for the crown. Unfortunately, after pageant officials forget to include a "no marriage" rule, they discover that "Miss" Alaska, Helmar Leiderman, is not only married, but a resident of New York City. In the 30's, reflecting the nation's fascination with Hollywood, the contest adds an optional talent competition. Winners receive Hollywood screen tests and Hollywood agents representing moguls such as Howard Hughes scour the contest for potential screen starlets. By 1950, pageants have achieved such popularity that parents are often heard to remark that every little girl's dream is to grow up to be Miss America. It is also in the 50's that new Miss America (1951) Yolande Betbeze, refuses to pose in a swimsuit, insisting that she is a classical singer, not a pin-up. Officials support her decision. Miffed, Catalina swimwear quits as a major sponsor of the Miss America Pageant and starts planning its own promotional vehicle, the sexier sister pageants, "Miss USA" and "Miss Universe" and also "Miss World" is first held held to promote the Festival of Britain. The 60's brought the founding of "The Miss Teenage America Pageant" and in 1962, Miss Haiti becomes the first black woman to make the semifinals at the Miss Universe Pageant. The late 60's also saw the Miss USA/Universe contests separate into two ftelevised pageants, Miss USA and Miss Universe, beginning a tradition that would become one of the highest rated television specials in the world and soon after the First Miss Black America Pageant is held in Atlantic City as a protest against the absence of black women in the Miss America Pageant. 1973 saw "The Miss Universe" pageant broadcast live worldwide via satellite for the first timeand begins a tradition of televising Universe Pageants from exotic locales around the globe. In 1977 "The Miss Teen All America Pageant" is started. and then in 1978, in a major racial breakthrough, Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad-Tobago, becomes the first black woman to win the coveted Miss Universe title. The historic moment is televised live by satellite from the Dominican Republic. In 1983, CBS televises the first Miss Teen USA Pageant from Lakeland, Florida. Ruth Zakarian, of New York, wins and also marking the most important racial milestone in pageant history, Vanessa Williams becomes the first African-American to win the Miss America title. In 1985, The "Mrs. World Pageant" is founded. 1990 saw, for the first time, Russia sent a Miss USSR (Evia Stalbovska of Latvia) to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant. In 1991, after appearing as a celebrity guest at the Miss Black America Pageant, world heavy weight boxing champion Mike Tyson is arrested for raping a contestant, Desiree Washington, during pageant week. After the national winner and other contestants claim he groped them, the pageant’s director labels the boxer a "serial buttocks fondler " and sues for damages. The case creates a media frenzy and Tyson is later convicted of rape and sentenced to six years in prison. In 1997, business tycoon Donald Trump purchases the Miss Universe system which consists of the "triple crown" - the Miss Teen USA, Miss USA, and Miss Universe pageants. 2002 saw trouble, as Miss World contestants gathered for the international pageant in Nigeria, a predominantly Muslim country, anti-pageant protests and rioting broke out. The violence was ignited after a woman journalist penned a story suggesting that Mohammed, Islam's prophet, might well have married one of the Miss World contestants. Several hundred people were killed in the violence that ensued. In 2003, our previously featured celebrity, Halle Berry, the first runner-up in the1986 Miss USA pageant and the first African American to represent the USA at the Miss World pageant, wins the 2002 Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film, Monster's Ball. In 2004, ABC announced that it would no longer televise the Miss America Pageant, but pageants remain strong and global to this day, with the most recent Miss Universe, Jennifer Hawkins, being voted for by the public in an international phone-in !!
The world of fashion is something we deal with everyday. Even people who say they don't care what they wear choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day. One certain thing in the fashion world is change. We are constantly being bombarded with new fashion ideas from music, videos, books, and television. Movies also have a big impact on what people wear. Ray-Ban sold more sunglasses after the movie Men In Black. Sometimes a trend is world-wide. Back in the 1950s, teenagers everywhere dressed like Elvis Presley, but who dictates fashion? Musicians and other cultural icons have always influenced what we're wearing, but so have political figures and royalty. Newspapers and magazines report on what Hillary Clinton wears. The recent death of Diana, the Princess of Wales, was a severe blow to the high fashion world, where her clothes were daily news. Fashion is an endless popularity contest. High fashion is the style of a small group of men and women with a certain taste and authority in the fashion world. People of wealth and position, buyers for major department stores, editors and writers for fashion magazines are all part of Haute Couture ("High Fashion" in French). Some of these expensive and often artistic fashions may triumph and become the fashion for the larger majority. Most stay on the runway.
