Colin was born on March 31, 1976, in Dublin, to Eamon Farrell, a former professional footballer, and his wife Rita. The youngest of four children, he originally planned to follow in his fatherís tracks, but Colin enjoyed a good time too much and found the idea of rigorous training daunting. Instead, the man with a penchant for colourful four-letter words spent a year travelling Down Under. Upon returning home he shifted gears, enrolling at the Gaiety School of Drama. But, not a great fan of school, he soon dropped out. Stage roles at Londonís famed Donmar Warehouse, where he was spotted by Oscar winner Kevin Spacey, who earmarked him for a later film, would follow, as did television roles. Then Colin made the leap to film and never looked back. Colin says,
"It all goes back to [Joel Schumacher]. I wouldn't have done Phone Booth without him. I wouldn't be doing Hart's War. I probably wouldn't have done American Outlaws if he hadn't picked me out of obscurity. I've worked, but not at the level or people I'm working with now if he hadn't taken a chance on an Irish kid playing a Texan." Our man, Colin, is known for making some outrageous statements but he also has some very interesting things to say. You can often gain a lot of insight into a person by what the statements they choose to say. Here are some of Colin's quotes:
-- "Iím single, Iím rich and Iím a movie star," he says. "If I canít have fun at this, whatís the point?
-- "I could smoke less and I'm sure I could drink less," Irish film star and heart-throb Colin Farrell was quoted as saying recently. "But there are girls back in Dublin who drink more in a night than I drink in a week."
-- "I'm a 26-year-old man trying to find my way in the world. I have a certain way of talking and explaining myself, but when you read it in print, it comes across very differently. But I don't want to start watching everything I say, and try and fit in. Without saying anything for the shock factor, I just want to keep spilling things out of my mouth, off the top of my head."
-- "People often ask me if I feel out of joint or discombobulated staying in hotels but I donít. If I owned a place in LA I would feel out of joint though. As far as I am concerned this is home because I donít have a place in LA, I always stay in hotels when I am working there. I have a place in Irishtown here that I have had for the last five years and itís always there just like I left it. Home Sweet Home.
-- "I've been lucky," he says. "I've skipped about 100 rungs on the ladder. So I don't have to go and live in LA or do the scene there to get noticed. I can go there, do the work and get out.
-- "I'm in no hurry to get anywhere. I don't have any plans. I don't have a map. If you did in this business, you'd destroy yourself."
-- "Ever since I can remember, as far back as when I was 10 or 12 years old, I never slept much," said the actor. "But the small hours by myself are lovely moments for me -- the hours between midnight and 3 in the morning."
-- "It's being in the right fuckin' place at the right time, a lot of that. And a lot of good breaks, man, whatever way the stars align. I work really hard, I work as hard as I possibly can and I never take any short cuts, never take short cuts. Just a lot of good luck and a lot of people who've taken a chance on me. Overnight success can merely be pin pointed to some person in your career, whether it's early like me, or late like that woman that was in Titanic. One person making that decision to put you in a role that finally gives you a bit of exposure that would allow people to coin you, and say something, like being an overnight successÖ that one person for me was Joel Schumacher"
-- "I love Ireland, its where my life is, its where my best friend is, I love the country and I love the people very much, and I really don't need another pair of slippers or a toothbrush anywhere else in the world right now. LA doesn't attract me at all. I'll go there for a week and fuckin' have a laugh and bang whoever I can, and I'll indulge myself a little bit, and play around and get the fuck outta there and get on a plane to Ireland. I'll live in Ireland and work wherever I need to go, I'll travel the world, but when I'm finished traveling I'll go home. And it's a great feeling to go home and walk back to me cottage. My heart's fine out in the middle of Dublin, there on the streets."
-- "Ah, I know what the important things are in life. I know that, just because I pretend to be someone else for two hours doesn't make me a better person than the next man. So, I know those things. Simple things."
-- "The reason why I can do what I do - and I'm not talking about acting, I'm talking about being away from home for long periods of time - is because I have such a fuckin' great thing to come back to. If I wasn't as lucky as I am, in respect to the family that I have and how much they are my friends, I would be coked out of my fuckin' head in L.A. I'm telling you - I know my fuckin' demons. I'd be coked out of my knot every night in L.A. I'd be banging more hookers than you could shake a fuckin' stick at. If I didn't have the family that I have, that's what I'd be doing. I'd be lost, you know? I'd be lost."
-- "I'm fairly low-maintenance. Packet of smokes and a few pints and I'm a happy man."
-- "I'm a very peaceful fellow, but I do have a bad temper."
-- "There are a lot of people who make an effort to look as if they're dressing down. I just dress down. I like to take things from film sets. I wear these boots from American Outlaws, and I nicked this jacket as well. But I'm happy in just T-shirts and stuff that people give me."
-- "I miss the people, the pubs, the canal, fish and chips - curry sauce on the side - cheese and nachos with jalapeno peppers in the UGC [theaters] in Tallaght. And I miss the seasons. I miss the grayness, the leaves on the ground. It could be a little bit more overcast in L.A. I find too much sun depressing."
-- "I'm not really a rebel, but I take chances. I have a good time, and I live life the way I want to live it."
-- "It's been a mad year. But I've got a great family and great friends. When I finish a job, I jump on a plane and go home. Being Irish is very much a part of who I am. I take it everywhere with me."
-- (On the girl that will interest him) "The usual obvious bullshit. Sense of humour, a bit of danger, good fun. A good heart is a really sexy thing. All women have the potential to be sexy and it's nothing to do with the dress someone wears or the make-up they put on their face, it's the aged-old cliche saying: 'What comes from inside'. God, I've met gorgeous women who I'd fancy and give one to, but at the end of the day they're not particularly sexy because they haven't got much going inside and they are too concerned with themselves. And then I've met women who wouldn't be as nearly as attractive and, because of the sense of fun they have and their joi de vivre, as they say, they'd be much sexier and you'd fall for them in a nanosecond"

Is it fair to call Colin a lady's man? We think so. His name has been linked with the likes of Angelina Jolie, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Salma Hayek, and Kelli Young, to name but a few. He's only been married for a brief time and is now divorced, single, and it doesn't look as if he's settling down any time soon. He is the 21st century 'good time man', with his bad ass temper and fun seeking nature. colin's had his fair share of nightmares, including a brief visit to rehab for dependency on pain medication, a result of a back injury suffered, well, we're not sure how he got it. Suffice it to say, he voluntarily checked himself in to deal with the problem. This comes as no surprise. The Hollywood hunk, known for his work-hard-play-harder attitude, would never do anything half measure. It's full on for Colin Farrell and his fans expect nothing less.
