Halle has not had an easy life, since she entered the world on August 14, 1966. Cleveland, Ohio, certainly not a paradise, to begin with, was not exactly heaven for our little mixed - race pixie. Her father walked out on the family when she was a mere four years old. In those days, having skin the colour of fine mocha was not advantageous and Halle and her sister were treated cruelly, even when they managed to move from the inner city to the suburbs of Cleveland. In 1983, when she was only 17 years old, Halle's then-boyfriend entered her name in the Miss Teen Ohio beauty pageant. Once again, it's no surprise that Halle got to wear the crown in that competition. But it didn't stop there: Halle won many other high-profile competitions, including Miss Teen All-American, Miss USA (first runner-up) and Miss World. Once she was done raking in points by winning pageant after pageant, Halle continued her education at Cleveland's Cuyahoga Community College in 1986, studying broadcast journalism. She never did complete her degree; but, she did leave the program to pursue something far more glamorous - modeling. And, she started studying acting in Chicago. While she didn't get the part in Charlie's Angels, Aaron Spelling encouraged Halle to keep going, which she did. Moving to Manhattan was a strategically bold move for the little girl from Cleveland. She landed her first television gig in 'Living Dolls'. Short-lived that it was, the cancelling of this show did not deter Halle, who was determined to make it big time. Her first real break came from Spike Lee, who cast her as a crack-addicted woman in Jungle Fever, co-starring Samuel L. Jackson. Halle was so determined to execute the role perfectly that she actually interviewed real addicts and stopped bathing 10 days before filming the racially charged film. Even though Hollywood was her dream, Halle took a role in 'Knot's Landing', a highly successful television show. She she soon landed another part, this time playing Damon Wayans' exotic girlfriend in the film The Last Boy Scout (1991), which also starred Bruce Willis. In 1992, Halle landed a starring role opposite none other than the man of comedy himself, Eddie Murphy, in Boomerang. In 1993, she married Atlanta Braves right fielder David Justice. Unfortunately, the marriage was short-lived and they divorced in 1996. Her role as an illiterate adict who abandons her child in a garbage can 'Losing Isaiah' was a turning point for Halle and made her very valuable as an actress. Having fun playing Storm in X-Men showed her versatility as an actress and we won't even mention the extremely light movie, 'The Flintstones'. It just shows that Halle takes any role and does it well. She did miss an opportunity to play Sandra Bullock's role in Speed, but it certainly did not hurt her career, as she starred in such movies as: Executive Decision (1996), Race the Sun (1996), B*A*P*S (1997), Bulworth (1998), and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, for which she won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV movie. During this time, Halle had an unfortunate run-in with the law and was charged with hit and run, for which she was sentenced to 200 hours of community service. She also made news when she was allegedly paid a $500,000 bonus to reveal her breasts in a scene in 2001's hacker film, Swordfish. The highlight of Halle's career came with her Oscar - winning performance in 'Monster's Ball'. She made history as the first black actress to win in the Best Actress Category. This cemented her as an A-List actress. Her sweet good looks didn't hurt, either. Since her Oscar, she's appeared in A James Bond film - 'Die Another Day' and also completed the trilogy of the 'X-Men' series, reprising her role as Storm. Add 'Gothika' and 'Catwoman' to the list and we've got a very well rounded actress. During this time, she again made headlines when her allegedly abusive ex-lover was revealed as Wesley Snipes, although Halle herself never confirmed or denied the truth of the allegations.
